Ramp Provisions

A.1.1Ramps shall be provided wherever there is a change in level. Minimum clear width: 1200 mm. Ramps ≥ 3000 mm wide require intermediate center handrails ("J-type" supports recommended).
A.1.2Maximum slope: 1:20 (standard). Steeper gradients up to 1:15 may be allowed in special cases. Maximum cross slope: 1:100. Level area min 1800 mm at top and bottom of ramp.
A.1.3Ramps longer than 10.50 m shall have intermediate landings min 1800 mm long. Raised edge min 100 mm on both sides.
A.1.4Warning tactile blocks: depth 600 mm, installed 300 mm from head and foot of ramp and at center of each landing.
A.1.5Handrails on both sides at 700 mm and 900 mm. 300 mm horizontal extension at upper and lower ends. Safety railing required when ramp leads toward vehicular traffic, min 1800 mm from foot.
C.1.1Accessible ramps required at entrances not at the same level as site arrival grade. Warning tactile blocks at top and bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum slope of an accessible ramp under BP344?
The standard maximum slope is 1:20 (5%). A steeper gradient of 1:15 is only permitted in special cases, limited to a maximum length of 10.50m and a maximum rise of 700mm. The old 1:12 (8.33%) slope cited in earlier references has been updated in the 2024 amended IRR.
Does BP344 require handrails on both sides of a ramp?
Yes. BP344 requires handrails on both sides of all accessible ramps, at dual heights of 700mm and 900mm. For ramps 3000mm or wider, an additional intermediate center handrail is also required.
Is a landing required at the top and bottom of every ramp?
Yes. A level landing (no slope) of minimum 1800mm in length is required at both the top and bottom of every accessible ramp. This allows wheelchair users to stop, turn, and maneuver safely.
What is the purpose of tactile warning blocks on ramps?
Tactile warning blocks alert visually impaired persons to the start and end of a ramp. Under BP344, they must be 600mm deep and placed 300mm from both the top and bottom of the ramp, and at the center of each intermediate landing.
